Nature's Landing Estate
Nature's Landing Eco Estate - a Conservation Success Story
In 1993, Keith Wilmot had the vision to apply for the subdivision and rezoning of a 102-hectare portion of his farm along the banks of the Bushman's River as a low-density housing, nature conservancy.
There was some well-meaning but uninformed opposition to his plans from local residents who wanted the 3km green belt to remain undisturbed.
Keith’s perseverance paid off and his application was eventually approved in 1995 after 2 years of negotiation, on condition that the provisions of the Nature Environmental Management Act were strictly complied with by developers. These conditions are entrenched in the title deeds of the 30 freehold erven and govern, internally, the extent of site clearing, building units, height and footprint.
Closer inspection of the riverine vegetation showed that it was far from pristine; because the area had not been adequately fenced, it had been plundered for muti, denuded of most tall trees and in one operation hundreds of game snares had been removed. Alien vegetation also abounded.
Today, being securely fenced, with controlled access and 24-hour security camera monitoring, the area's fauna and flora have largely recovered to their former pristine state, with an impressive array of indigenous plants, trees, birds and animals.
Nature’s Landing is a testament to one man’s vision and the commitment of the Nature’s Landing Homeowner’s Association to manage a sensitive eco-system and protect it from the ravages of man.
